Part 46: Do you know what you just did?

Update 37: Do you know what you just did?

Route 27

Farewell Johto, we shall return, but for now, we must head east to the Pokemon League.

: Do you know what you just did? You've taken your first step into KANTO. Check your POKéGEAR MAP and see.

So yeah, Kanto is in the game. It's kinda shit, we'll go there later. For now, we're just sticking to heading to the Pokemon League.

We could've come here anytime after beating Morty, but you're blocked pretty quickly unless you have Waterfall, so there isn't much point.

Let's head to Kanto.

Tohjo Falls

Alright, that's our second one, so we'll soon be able to do a good chunk of stone evolutions. Just gotta figure out where to put them in the LP.

Wheeeeee. Well that was a fun cave, let's never go into it again.

Route 27

Gah!

You were lying in wait for a while, weren't you?

Razor Leaf (Happa Kattā: Leaf Cutter) is a Grass move with 55BP, 25PP and 95% accuracy with a high critical hit ratio. I made good use of this move in the last LP and it's still pretty cool, since there aren't too many Grass moves that are available and dependable.

HP: 80 | ATK: 82 | DEF: 83 | SP.ATK: 100 | SP.DEF: 100 | SPD: 80 | TOTAL: 525
#228: Venusaur

Setting up a Future Sight while facing another opponent is one of those high level strats you see me do so often. It's satisfying to hit the next thing that comes in.

"evolution POKéMON."

: Evolution really does make POKéMON stronger. But evolved forms also learn moves later on.

: Are your POKéMON loyal enough for you to win? Let me see... Ah! Your POKéMON trusts you very much. It's nice to see a good trainer. Here. A gift for your journey.

: It's a move that inflicts damage on both battlers. It's for advanced trainers only. Use it if you dare. Good luck!

We don't really have much need for Sandstorm (Sunaarashi), a Rock status move with 10PP that damages all non-Rock, Ground and Steel types for 1/8th of their health every turn for three turns. Synthesis, Morning Sun and Moonlight recover half the normal HP. Like all weathers it's pretty meh since it is Gen 2.

"Let me battle you!"

HP: 50 | ATK: 60 | DEF: 95 | SP.ATK: 120 | SP.DEF: 70 | SPD: 70 | TOTAL: 465
#119: Magneton

Couple of nasty moves here. Amnesia (Dowasure: Memory Lapse) isn't as completely broken as it was last gen, but this Psychic status move with 20PP raises up Special Defense by two stages instead of both Special stats. It's for the best. Earthquake (Jishin) is just flat out one of the best moves in the game. With 100BP, 10PP and 100% accuracy, you need this move somewhere on your team, every game you play. Now it deals double damage to opponents using Dig. Nasty.

: Heh, sorry, I just wanted to say something cool.

Just before we move on, there are a couple of Pokemon that we can now catch for the first time. Weird, right?

Yowza, Tri Attack (Torai Atakku) is a Normal move with 80BP, 10PP and 100% accuracy that has a 20% chance of paralyzing, burning or freezing the opponent, with a 6.67% chance at each. It will inflict status regardless of type and can be a very good STAB move, as I put to great effect last LP.

We've caught Wukong and Tri Ace, who will be next?

Apparently ponyta.swf. As it SHOULD be.

While I have traded over Rapidash for the item showoff, since it evolves at level 40, we're not too far it from having it legit. More trainers you say?

: Let me guess what you're thinking. Mmmmmmm... I got it! You're on the POKéMON LEAGUE challenge!

"the LEAGUE."

: That's what my premonition says.

Eh, most days.

"good trainers."

Ah that's why I didn't notice you ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I have to really remember that there's a Whirlpool here. Why is there a Whirlpool here?

Ah, containment reasons.

: If my FARFETCH'D sees anything pretty, it goes and gets it. Do you like pretty things? I could share if it gets some more. What's your number? I'll call. Don't expect a whole lot, OK?

I'm never coming back to this route ever again, but sure!

: I'll call you as soon as I get something pretty.

Ooh, found something pretty already. We don't need that weird bird guy!

Now the sun bird can call upon rays of death to smote his enemies. With the Sunny Day/Solarbeam combo, Helios has an actual special attack that can be super effective. It's not amazing, but it's something, since we've still got a while before it gets some kind of useful STAB attack.

Uh, well, I don't really need to.

Why the hell does she have two Starmie?

: Not bad... It's something to beat me, even by an unlikely fluke... I like you! Give me your number! You can be my practice partner!

: Don't be too proud about beating me! It was a fluke!

So many numbers, but really, so little space and so little time.

: I feel like I could boot even the LEAGUE CHAMP!

You know, if I'd picked up my sixth member much earlier, my Pokemon would be a few levels behind. Would Kakarott have even evolved by now?

New route means new Pokemon.

HP: 75 | ATK: 100 | DEF: 110 | SP.ATK: 45 | SP.DEF: 55 | SPD: 65 | TOTAL: 450
#049: Sandslash

We should've seen a Sandslash already from a Camper on Route 43, but it seems I didn't show it. Oh well, fixing that now! Slash (Kirisaku) is a Normal move with 70BP, 20PP and 100% accuracy that has an increased critical hit ratio. It's a pretty damn good Normal moves that potentially outdamages other standard Normal moves like Strength and Return.

Another one in the box.

"I'm impressed."

: But you're not satisfied by just collecting them, right?

"experiences."

: Don't get lazy and complacent.

Phew, we could use a pit stop before the final push.

Do do do do dooooo

: Your POKéMON are looking good! Keep at it!

Let's see what's in the second house.

Ooh, a diary.

: We take pride in serving POKéMON trainers. When trainers talk to you, give them something useful. Love, MONICA.

The rest of the book tells you where the siblings appear, but we've met them all, so no need!

"be good."

: I'm going to give this battle everything I've got!

HP: 79 | ATK: 83 | DEF: 100 | SP.ATK: 85 | SP.DEF: 105 | SPD: 78 | TOTAL: 530
#234: Blastoise

: I'll have to try harder next time.

"gain power."

Experience and levels! It's good to be facing some good opponents for a change.

HP: 80 | ATK: 105 | DEF: 65 | SP.ATK: 100 | SP.DEF: 60 | SPD: 70 | TOTAL: 480
#066: Victreebel

HP: 55 | ATK: 130 | DEF: 115 | SP.ATK: 50 | SP.DEF: 50 | SPD: 75 | TOTAL: 475
#165: Kingler

: But VICTORY ROAD is tough. Practically nobody goes there! Wow, you're tough. I haven't battled that seriously a long time. Could I get your phone number? I'd like to battle again when I heal KINGLER and the rest of my team.

: How should I beat you? I'm tormented by those thoughts all the time...

outofcontext.jif

There's no end to these cool trainers.

HP: 60 | ATK: 95 | DEF: 80 | SP.ATK: 60 | SP.DEF: 80 | SPD: 30 | TOTAL: 405
#071: Parasect

Now this is very interesting. Swords Dance (Tsurugi no Mai) is a Normal status move with 30PP that boosts your Attack by 2 stages. Very nice. The only way to get it onto Parasect is to teach it that move in Gen 1. Quite interesting.

HP: 80 | ATK: 82 | DEF: 78 | SP.ATK: 95 | SP.DEF: 80 | SPD: 85 | TOTAL: 500
#139: Golduck

"the LEAGUE."

: I need to do some more training. I hear that the LEAGUE's ELITE FOUR are tougher than GYM LEADERS.

That seems like the last trainer. We're almost done here.

: He was really strong, but... It was as if he absolutely had to win at any cost. I felt sorry for his POKéMON.

HP: 65 | ATK: 100 | DEF: 70 | SP.ATK: 80 | SP.DEF: 80 | SPD: 105 | TOTAL: 500
#202: Rapidash

"partners."

: It's been a while since I lost... You're very good at battling. We should battle again sometime. By challenging a tough trainer like you, I think I can get better too. So how about it? Would you give me your phone number?

I hope I never come back to this route again. It's very long and out of the way.

Route 23

Phew, relative sanctuary.

"selves may pass."

: Oh! The eight BADGES of JOHTO! Please, go right on through!

: The ELITE FOUR are so strong it's scary, and they're ready for you!

: You'll see scary strong POKéMON out there.

Victory Road

Welcome back to Victory Road, the first location we'll be revisiting from the previous generation. It's been 3 years since we've last been here, so what exactly has changed?

Well there's no more Strength puzzles to remove obstacles, so that's nice. There's also no trainers, so that's also nice. It's also smaller with barely anything in it, so that's... nice? Eh, we'll talk about it later.

Well hey, we don't have to choose which item to get first like the last time around.

New Pokemon to catch, very nice.

Moving on.

Three years on and the various switches don't work anymore, so it's a lot easier getting to the exit. But it's not where you expect.

There's, uh, really not much to show off here.

Going through to where to exit would've been in the previous gen is where we find an item. The search continues.

Oh. Found it. This is where we had to push to boulder to whole way to unlock where we had just gone. Confused? I hope so.

I wonder what Moltres is up to?

Oh, we're too late. Some twat already caught it. Oh well, maybe that mysterious, yet handsome, stranger will trade. Instead, we get Earthquake, a move some of our team will absolutely appreciate, but we're saving it for someone special.

Alright, let's get out of here before we're EDGED out. Hah. Man, I am running out of these.

: ...Are you going to take the POKéMON LEAGUE challenge? ...Don't make me laugh. You're so much weaker than I am. I'm not like I was before. I now have the best and strongest POKéMON with me. I'm invincible! MARINA! I challenge you!

The best and strongest Pokemon you say?

I don't believe you. But you're getting there.

: I gave it everything I had... What you possess, and what I lack... I'm beginning to understand what that dragon master said to me...

"greatest trainer..."

: I'm going to find out why I can't win and become stronger... When I do, I will challenge you. And I'll beat you down with all my power. ...Humph! You keep at it until then.

Aww, he's having character development. Good for him.

Route 23

But we've made it. After 37 updates of mucking about, we have arrived at...

Indigo Plateau: The Ultimate Goal for Trainers! The highest Pokémon authority!
Sekiei Kōgen: The Pokémon Trainer's zenith! The highest organization on Pokémon.

And next time... we have still got a fair few things to finish up in Johto. But I can assure you that next next time is when we'll be taking on the Johto Elite Four. Hell yeah.
